Yahoo – Twitter Integration To Happen Soon.. Yahoo Meme Future? India Impact?

Category : News & Events

Yahoo seems on a tie up spree with anyone who isn’t a part of the google or microsoft clan. So if it partnered with Facebook earlier and Dailymotion after that now its the time to tweet it up with twitter.

LA Times reports that Yahoo and twitter have signed up for twitter to be integrated in Yahoo web search and also as part of the portal. The deal is similar to the one Yahoo stuck with Facebook. Mashable has details on the deal given below:

The integration will focus on three primary areas:

- Access to your Twitter feed on Yahoo

- Ability to update status from Yahoo

- Yahoo Search and media integration

End of Yahoo Meme? (It wasn’t as buzzy as google buzz)

Yahoo meme which was launched by Yahoo as a twitter competitor never really took off. With this new integration announcement it remains to be seen as to what is the future of Meme. Will it be shutdown like a number of Yahoo services? (Geocites, Yahoo 360, Gallery and Go )

Why this will be a boon for twitter in India?

Twitter is still nascent in India. Last statistics I knew was about 3 million registered users and growing. With the integration with Yahoo which is the number 2 most frequented website in India it would surely get a wider audience in India. Though there is no confirmation in how many cities the integration with twitter would be rolled out by Yahoo my guess is it will be global just like facebook.

All in all twitter has already been hitting the headlines each day for some or the other comment that a celebrity makes on it in India. The Yahoo integration will only make sure that twitter is that much harder to ignore for audiences in India.

Twitter Shining: 50 Million Tweets Per Day, Dalai Lama Joins Twitter

Category : News & Events

Seems like very good things are happening to Twitter this week. First, they announced that Twitter has now reached a mark of 50 million tweets per day on Twitter – A great achievement for Twitter indeed. Secondly, the spiritual leader of Buddhists – Dalai Lama has joined twitter!

50 million tweets per day on Twitter

Twitter, the popular microblogging site which is being used almost everyone these days has recorded some really impressive metrics off late. According to a release, almost 50 million tweets are being posted on a daily basis on Twitter. Launched in 2007, Twitter had announced 5000 tweets daily on a average in the same year. The number went on to increase to 3 lakh tweets per day in 2008 and in 2010, the number has risen to 500 lakhs per day – that is close to 165X growth compared to last year in terms of tweet message volumes.

Although these figures are not even close to those of Facebook – Around a billion messages sent everyday through Facebook’s chat. Can twitter every equal Facebook, say in 2 years? This, only time will tell!

Sachin Tendulkar’s Double Century Makes Him God On Twitter!

Category : News & Events

Yesterday was a landmark day if you are an Indian and a cricket fan. Sachin Tendulkar played one of the best innings of his life by scoring 200 runs in an ODI innings against South Africa.
But whats even more interesting is that Sachin became a twitter master too owning 3 out of the top 10 trending spots on twitter. The keyword that ended up trending the most was #sachinisgod. That too not just for an hour or two but almost 4 hours all through South Africa’s second innings. The reason this is interesting is because it points towards both the growing Indian population on twitter and the growing use of twitter during events such as these.

Its not only Sachin’s double ton but also during the Carlton Towers fire incident the term Carlton towers was trending and Most news channels picked up the images first put out on twitter by Jackerhack who was in the building at the time of the incident.

All in all this tells me that the sheer openness of twitter makes it a more public platform and therefore gives it far more publicity than facebook in India. With all the bollywood celebs right from King Khan to Junior Bachchan tweeting away to glory and the trending topics starting to become more Indian its only time before twitter becomes a serious influencer of the media in India (if it hasn’t already become).

PS: Trending topics on twitter are global so #sachinisgod was being seen by the world on twitter!
